More than 50 jobseekers explored employment and training opportunities at the recent Spotlight on Retail and Hospitality event, held in Launceston on Wednesday 21 October.

The successful event brought together 13 exhibitors from across the retail, hospitality, employment and training sectors, giving attendees the opportunity to connect directly with employers, explore available positions and learn about pathways into employment.

Participating organisations included Best Western, Bunnings, KFC, McDonald’s, Hungry Jack’s, TasTAFE, Busy At Work, Work & Training, YFCC Employment Services, Rupert & Hound and Cataract on Paterson, Searson Buck (Career Connector Service), Tas Hospitality and Hotel Grand Chancellor.

Spotlight events provide a valuable opportunity for jobseekers to speak directly with employers who are actively recruiting, while also connecting with training providers and support services that can help them take the next step towards employment.

For one young jobseeker, attending the event was initially a daunting experience.

Although keen to explore opportunities in the hospitality industry, she felt nervous about approaching employers and was unsure what to expect.

However, with encouragement from YFCC staff and a welcoming response from exhibitors, she was able to build her confidence and have positive conversations with the organisations in attendance.

She particularly appreciated the time employers took to answer her questions, explain the opportunities available and make her feel comfortable throughout the event.

Having gained a better understanding of the different career pathways available, she is now applying for positions with KFC, Hungry Jack’s and Hotel Grand Chancellor.

Her experience highlights the important role these events play in helping young people overcome barriers, build confidence and take meaningful steps towards employment.

YFCC extends its thanks to all participating organisations for sharing their time and expertise, and to the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) for its ongoing support of Spotlight events across Northern and North West Tasmania.
