Homelessness Week raises awareness of people experiencing homelessness, the issues they face, and the actions needed to achieve long-term solutions. Homelessness Week events are held across Australia each year in the first week of August. The national Homelessness Week theme for 2024 is” Homelessness Act Now”. The theme highlights the need for action to end homelessness.
To celebrate Homelessness Week this year YFCC held an event at the new Mount Street facility, with Mayor of Burnie, Teeny Brumby, announcing the official name of the centre as ‘Liprini”.
Liprini means “House” or “Home” in Palawa kani, the language of the Tasmanian Aboriginals.
Around 60 YFCC partners and key stakeholders attended the event, with guided tours of the facility, hosted by several CASS and TASS staff.
Guest speakers included Minister Roger Jaensch, Pattie Chugg (CEO of Shelter Tas), Teeny Brumby (Mayor of Burnie) and Chloe, a current TASS and ex CASS/Arvos client. Chloe spoke of her journey from homelessness, the supports she has received from YFCC and her accomplishments to date in her life. Chloe’s story was a great example of how young people can achieve their goals with someone alongside them for support, and a great testament to the positive impact YFCC services can have on young people across our communities.
