A New Light for Wuranyi: Artwork That Reflects the Journey to Independence
Recently, Wuranyi Youth to Independence Facility proudly received a donation of First Nations artwork titled A New Light, created by artist Rory Combo, from our long-standing collaborative partner AKG. This generous gift holds deep meaning for our facility and the young people we support.
A New Light tells a story of challenge, growth, courage and transformation. Experiences that closely mirror the journeys of many young people who come to Wuranyi seeking stability, skill-building, and a sense of direction as they transition into adulthood.
The Story Within the Artwork
At the base of the artwork lies the coral, symbolising the struggles and pressures of everyday life. These challenges can make it hard for people to move forward, and the fish nestled among the coral reflect those moments when young people feel stuck or weighed down by circumstances outside their control.
Moving outward into the open ocean, the fish swimming freely represent the first brave steps toward change. These are the moments when young people begin to take action, seek support, or try something new, steps that mark the beginning of positive transformation.
At the surface, dolphins leaping and sea turtles rising signal hope and possibility. They symbolise people who have broken through barriers, found clarity, and discovered a brighter path ahead. Their movement toward the light reflects newfound confidence, independence, and a sense of freedom.
Why the Artwork Belongs at Wuranyi
Wuranyi is more than a residence. It’s a place of growth, learning and community. Here, young people are supported as they build the skills, resilience and independence needed for adulthood. The story depicted in A New Light aligns beautifully with the purpose of our facility:
- Overcoming challenges: Many young residents arrive with barriers that feel difficult to navigate alone.
- Taking first steps: With support, they begin making positive changes—big or small—that move them toward independence.
- Finding the light: Through guidance, learning opportunities and a safe place to call home, they discover their strengths and shape their futures.
The artwork now displayed at Wuranyi serves as a daily reminder that every young person’s journey is unique, and that transformation is possible with the right support, community and belief in one’s potential.
A Gift That Strengthens Our Partnership
We extend our sincere thanks to AKG for this meaningful donation. Their gift reflects our shared commitment to helping young people overcome obstacles and move toward brighter futures.
A New Light is more than art, it is a symbol of hope, freedom and growth. We are proud to display it at Wuranyi and to share its message with the young people who walk through our doors every day.
