Working it out

CEO MESSAGE

During April I celebrated 20 years of employment with YFCC. 20 years ago, we were a small Organisation, known as Youth and Family Focus (YaFF), based largely in the Mersey-Leven area. Due to a merger with Community Connections in 2013-2014, we expanded to providing services across the NW and West Coasts and King Island. We now also provide services in the North, with over 70 staff. During this time, I have had the pleasure of working alongside, and learning from, many passionate and committed CEOs, Managers and front-line workers. What a journey it has been!

This last quarter saw the completion of the highly successful Project Detour program. Project Detour worked with young people (aged between 16 and 24 years), who identified as being impacted by crime and/or anti-social behaviours and were at risk of becoming entrenched in the criminal justice system, to address health and wellbeing issues, build relationships and social connections and provide soft employment skills training. During the funded 2 years, Project Detour saw 56 young people achieve employment outcomes, 286 young people achieve training outcomes, and 25 young people attain educational outcomes. However, despite these outstanding outcomes and exceptional community support, funding ceased for the program on the 30th of April – just because it works does not necessarily translate to funding!

In other news, along with many others, we worked to raise awareness regarding youth housing and homelessness through organised events and media for Youth Homelessness Matters Day on the 17th of April. With 39% of Tasmania’s homeless population under the age of 25, it was inspiring to come together with so many like-minded organisations and individuals to elevate young people’s voices and work to ensure their needs are prioritised.

YOUTH HOMELESSNESS MATTERS DAY

Youth Homelessness Matters Day (YHMD) is a national day that was conceived in 1990 to raise awareness and public discussion about child and youth homelessness. It is held every year on the third Wednesday of April. This year, YHMD was Wednesday 17th April.

PROJECT DETOUR

Over the past two years, Project Detour has worked with young people (aged 16 to 24 years) who identify as being impacted by crime and/or anti-social behaviours and may be at risk of becoming entrenched in the criminal judicial system. The project has worked with them to address health and wellbeing concerns, foster meaningful relationships, and cultivate social connections. Additionally, it has provided essential training in soft employment skills and essential life skills, empowering young people to navigate the complexities of adulthood with improved confidence and resilience.
