CEO MESSAGE
Welcome to our winter newsletter.

YFCC is proud to have had our first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) formally endorsed by Reconciliation Australia, reflecting the Organisation’s commitment to learning from the world’s oldest continuing civilisation. Our RAP will be officially launched during NAIDOC Week in July. This RAP will drive a focused effort by the Organisation to strengthen our relationships with First Nation’s colleagues, clients and partners and facilitate opportunities for a more inclusive, culturally safe and respectful environment in ways that genuinely value and respect First Nations peoples’ history, knowledge, rights and truths. As part of this work, YFCC also commissioned an artwork, ‘Waters’, created by Bonnie Starick, a First Nations woman of the Trawlwoolway nation of the North-Northeast Coast of Lutruwita. Bonnie comes from a long line of strong Aboriginal women. She is learning the traditional cultural practice of Shell Stringing from her Mother. This is an important tradition that is passed down through the matriarchal line. ‘Waters’ was inspired by the journey of Bonnie and her Mother walking the beaches, gathering shells and yarning. The ‘muka’ (sea) is very important to First Nations people in Lutruwita and holds many places in their stories as well as being essential to many of their cultural traditions still practiced today.

We are delighted to have received an extension to our Fit for Work program in Devonport, ensuring continuation of this highly effective service working with young people until 30 June 2024. We are also very pleased to have commenced our Peer Worker program and are already seeing significant benefits for clients across service areas.

April and May were busy and productive periods for our teams, with the organisation and facilitation of several significant events for Youth Week and Families Week. You can read more about these below.

For a long time, there was a misconception that alcohol and other drug counselling services were only available for the people who were using said substance/s. At YFCC we proudly offer support to anyone impacted by substance misuse, and this often includes impacted family members or loved ones.
