CEO MESSAGE
The big news this last quarter was the delivery of the long-awaited State budget. Again, we saw no significant investment in prevention or early intervention strategies. Along with many others, we have long advocated for these strategies – we have an abundance of reports, recommendations and analysis by experts also supporting this need – however, we are yet to see meaningful change. The chasm between identifying what is needed and acting upon it continues to widen. These decisions create risks for communities. Early intervention enables early responses to known risk factors and builds on associated protective factors. Intervening at an early stage reduces future demand on already congested and costly tertiary services. It is time to be brave, to support community wellbeing and fund what is needed.
Fortunately, we also have some positive news to share. YFCC delivered the Inspiring Youth Awards in October. Over 200 people gathered for this noteworthy event to support and celebrate young people’s achievements. The nominations were outstanding. Please read more about this event in this newsletter.
The wonderful North West Student Society at the University of Tasmania raised and donated funds to YFCC from their Winter Charity Ball which raised awareness about rural health. These funds will directly support rural communities on the North West Coast and King Island. Please see photo below from this special event.
We were also exceptionally pleased to have funding confirmed, through Skills Tasmania Training and Work Pathways Program, to enable us to continue to deliver Fit for Work in Burnie and Devonport. This program has an exceptional record in supporting young people to achieve employment, educational and training goals.

On Wednesday 9th October over 200 Northwest Coasters gathered in Devonport to celebrate and recognise 54 young people from right across the Coast, who were nominated for the Inspiring Youth Awards. The awards are designed to capture the everyday positive contributions young people make to our community and let them know they are seen and appreciated.

This program is for those families with children aged 0-12 years old (including pregnancy) in the Burnie Municipality, offering assistance through parenting support, community connections, social participation, advocacy and referral to other service providers.
