CEO MESSAGE
Here we are in the last month of winter. So many exciting things have been happening here at YFCC we’ve hardly had a chance to feel the cold.
Late June we received very positive news that Community Voices will be continued until March 2021. This project, delivered in partnership with WISE Employment and Creativity Australia, brings together young and mature aged job seekers, migrants, refugees, young parents and carers for a weekly community choir session (now run on-line). Participants are also provided with individualised support services through project workers who help them identify their goals and develop case plans to achieve them. The project also recruits mentors who also support participants to become more work ready.
During early August we commenced the take-home naloxone pilot project. We are fortunate to be one of the sites in Tasmania undergoing the trial through the Needle Syringe Program, with the support and guidance of Population Health Services. This important project aims to distribute naloxone to those at risk of opioid overdose. The data collected across the State will feed into a national approach to deliver naloxone to people at risk of experiencing or witnessing an opioid-related overdose.
We are very excited to have Tess from Working It Out, one of our partner organisations, join our team on site at 29 Wilson Street, Burnie, 2 days per week. Working together we will be able to provide improved supports and education for people negotiating their gender, sexuality and/or intersex status.
We are thrilled to have Sue Hayman, Registered Psychologist, also join our team on site at 129 Wilson Street from September. Sue has worked for over 20 years in private counselling practice in NSW and Tasmania. Sue will be providing Medicare rebated, bulk billed counselling appointments for clients, helping to reduce barriers to accessing vital mental health support for those who are in need.
Finally, we are very grateful to the Dussledorp forum for their generous donation to support the junction hub in Burnie. This donation will support employment costs for the junction, ensuring our youth engagement programs can continue.

Every year, starting the first Sunday in September is National Child Protection Week.
In 1990 the first National Child Protection campaign was launched, with the aim of bringing abuse and neglect to the forefront of people everywhere and the issue to become part of the national agenda. Since this date, the need to put children first and ensure their safety has been recognised as extremely important and the safety of children has become everybody’s business.

We are excited to be in the middle of the nomination period for our Inspiring Youth Awards. The awards aim to recognise and congratulate some of the many young North West Tasmanians who make positive contributions to their friends, families or the broader community.

Supporting Sports Clubs to create safe environments for LGBTIQ+ FOLKS
Almost any LGBTIQ+ person who has played sport, whether it be at school, for a local club, or at an elite level, will have at best questioned about whether it would be an ok place for them to come out, and at worst been exposed to hateful and hurtful language and abuse, if not physical abuse.
