CEO MESSAGE

This past month we have focused on a phased and safe return to our various work sites and to full face to face service delivery with safety plans, physical distancing and hygiene measures in place. We continue to be thankful to all staff and clients for their adaptability during these times.

Together with the Drug Education Network, The Salvation Army and Holyoake we have commenced the organisational readiness and planning phase of the Peer Workforce Project. We are now preparing for the peer trainee recruitment process to begin in July.

Due to a successful EOI funding grant application to Communities for Children - Burnie, we are very excited to announce we will be continuing to deliver Helping Young Families in Burnie as a community partner, working with CatholicCare Tasmania, as the Facilitating Partner and Funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. The program aims to improve the health and well being of families and the development of young children, from before birth to age 12 years.

Finally, we have great pleasure in announcing we will be commencing a new project, Survival Strategies in the Kitchen. The project will build the skills and knowledge of young people to plan and prepare healthy and affordable meals for themselves and their families. This will be achieved through delivery of a series of six workshops, repeated across six locations for a period of two years. Workshops will be held in both Devonport and Burnie. The project has been made possible through funding from the Tasmanian Community Fund under Grant Round 40, and the support of project partners Devonport City Council, Burnie City Council and the Child and Family Centres in East Devonport and Burnie. The Tasmanian Community Fund is an independent Fund that supports and strengthens Tasmanian communities by distributing funds to those communities.

COVID-19 UPDATE

As restrictions around Tasmania begin to ease and life returns to normal, the team at YFCC have been working hard to ensure we can resume many of our services in a safe and socially distanced way. Maintaining the health and safety of our clients, participants and staff is the ultimate priority. While we look forward to the resumption of face to face services including counselling, youth activities, having our Junctions open and available to the public, there will be some changes.

TRANSITIONAL ACCOMMODATION SUPPORT SERVICE INFORMATION (TASS)

The Transitional Accommodation Support Service (TASS) works with young people and young parents to maintain their existing accommodation and/or make a successful move into long term, safe, and affordable housing. We believe all young people have the right to safe and sustainable accommodation.

Young people, aged 15-20 years, who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness, are able to access medium term/transitional accommodation through TASS (this includes young parents and their children).

FAMILIES WEEK 2020 REPORT

Families Week 2020 occurred between the 15th and the 21st of May. Like previous years, for Families Week YFCC partnered with the East Devonport Child and Family Centre and the Burnie Child and Family Centre to once again, celebrate ‘all things family’.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions the usual Families Week event was unable to occur, which meant that creativity was required.

INSPIRING YOUTH AWARDS 2020

Celebrating young people's contributions on Tasmania's NW Coast

In 2020 YFCC are launching a new event that will celebrate the contributions of young people to our community. The Inspiring Youth Awards aim to highlight the positive, everyday actions that so many of our young people undertake, but often don’t get recognition for or even noticed. With the impacts of COVID-19 this event was put on hold while everyone focused on staying safe and the many changes in our lives.
